Spirit School

In honour of Black History Month, this episode highlights Black mediums in history, Sojourner Truth and Le Cercle Harmonique. Unlike my usual episodes where I riff on an inspiration or idea, I did a lot of research and prepared notes to ensure I was sharing accurate information about these amazing historical mediums. 

Although I have an appreciation for the structure and awareness that spiritualism has brought to mediumship, my guides have ensured that my approach to mediumship has been through the lens of my Indigenous culture. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from elders at my corporate position in Indigenous health and wellness. I reconnected to my culture through this experience since residential schools prevented me from being immersed in it growing up. It is important to remember that mediumship and spirit communication has existed as long as we have been here on earth. We have always communicated with our ancestors and I invite you to learn about your own culture’s history with mediumship. 

As I reflected on my research for this episode and the impacts on society that these people had, I have been considering what I will leave behind as my own legacy through my work as a medium and inspirational speaker. Take some time to think about what you share of your beliefs and opinions and how you want to be remembered from your imprint on the world.

Sojourner Truth highlights:

• Sojourner was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in New York state in 1797
• Isabella was the first Black woman to sue a white man and win in court when she fought for custody of her son
• In 1843, Isabella changed her name to Sojourner Truth, declaring that she would travel to preach truth and work against injustice 
• Around 1856, she moved to Harmonica, Michigan where her spiritualism journey began
• Anne Braude, a lecturer at Harvard Divinity School talks about how Spiritualism in America was informed by the traditions of enslaved African people in North America
• Many abolitionists and feminists had a connection to spiritualism and most working mediums were women
• At the time of her passing in 1883, Sojourner Truth had never learned to read or write, but her lectures changed the cultural fabric of the United States

Le Cercle Harmonique Highlights

• Le Cercle Harmonique was a Spiritualist group of seven Afro-Creole men from affluent families in New Orleans founded by Henry Louis Rey in the early 1850s
• These circles combined Spiritualism, radicalism from the Caribbean and France, and Andrew Jackson Davis’ Harmonial Philosophy. 
• Protocol included an emphasis on punctuality so as to not disturb the harmony created and the room needed to be dark so the mediums could concentrate
• There were messages from deceased family members of the group and also well known spirits such as Voltaire, Vincent de Paul and Abraham Lincoln
• “The Idea” was the foundational principle of the circle, representing egalitarianism, equality and brotherhood - a spirit world structure and model for the physical world
• Unlike their white Spiritualist contemporaries, Le Cercle Harmonique received messages identifying a spirit world without race where bright spirits would replace raced bodies

This episode is from the Spirit School Lecture Series that highlights my live teachings in the areas of mediumship, spiritual and personal development, entrepreneurship and quality of life.  Today’s episode about creating boundaries and connecting to the wisdom of your body is a compilation of three IGTV videos from the past two years. 

Recently, I have been assessing how I can have stronger boundaries around my energy in my business. I’ve always responded directly to every message and request and as my business has expanded, the way that I serve needs to be more sustainable. I have structured my schedule to accommodate a week off every month.  

Though being on the receiving end can sometimes feel like rejection, I hope that by setting some personal boundaries, you are empowered to create your own. We are all worthy of a life filled with peace, joy, expansion and love.

Some of the main points from the episode are:

- I took time off to be in my feminine energy through feeling my emotions and connecting with water

- Processing emotions and healing around being safe in my body

- Setting boundaries allows be to show up better for the people in my life

- I created clarity for myself by quitting drinking as a lifestyle choice for awhile

- It wasn’t the alcohol, but drinking to numb my feelings that was a problem for me

- Feeling stuck may be your body asking you to slow down and rest

- If you need to get things done, start with what brings you joy

- I also quit smoking 10 years ago and it was the most difficult thing I’ve done

- I love the life I’ve created and am energized thinking of the changes to come

- My body has changed since quitting smoking and having kids and I feel beautiful!

- Revealed by Meggan Watterson has broken me open and brought my focus to the voice and divinity within

- Many of us experience trauma that makes us feel unsafe in our bodies, making it difficult to sit with ourselves in stillness

- Mediumship is a lifestyle and requires healing work and self-compassion

Find Your Cosmic Calling with Astrologer Natalie Walstein

I am so excited to introduce you to Natalie Walstein, host of the Cosmic Calling podcast! She was one of my first mentors when I went full-time in my business and I’ve been inspired by her podcast for a long time as well.

Some highlights from my conversation with Natalie:

A birth chart covers your soul’s mission, so parts of it may not resonate until later as your life unfolds.

- Astrology is interpreted differently by each astrologer. Find what resonates with you!

- Helping people to leave jobs they hate and transition into doing what they really love is what made Natalie choose career astrology.

- Natalie was introduced to spirituality at an early age but didn’t take it seriously until she had a serious illness and had a spiritual awakening.

- Looking at the symbols, she is able to feel their energy and see visions of what they mean and channel pages of information about them.

- Your birth chart is an accumulation of past lifetimes as well as this lifetime.

- Astrology can help people find what type of work will light them up and to decondition from the mindset of working to survive.

- As you use the book with your chart, check in with yourself and ask if you’re aligned.

- Learning astrology and your own chart is an ongoing process and you can focus on one piece at a time

- Natalie recently had another spiritual awakening while taking an angel messenger course and has been working with angel energy in her life

- Angel messages are about the bigger picture and loving acceptance

February Spirit Messages

Hello Spirit School listeners! January was an intense month for me personally. I got sick leading up to the launch of The Initiation and had to push back my mastermind but at the same time, I was expanding my team by two members. 

I’ve been working with Spirit to understand my process of manifestation and the Initiation was an amazing experiment. I desired to have 44 people sign up for it and it did not seem like it was going to happen. I didn’t have the energy to do all of the typical marketing strategies so I leaned into trust and the 44th person signed up 10 minutes before the first live call! It was a really cool lesson for me. I’m choosing to highlight the things that went right even though so much went wrong and I hope you’re able to do the same.

The determination that I needed to harness to persevere is very aligned with the messages I received for our Spirit Messages this month! 

The highlights from the February Spirit Messages:

• I don’t have the same commitment to my health that I do in my business
• We all have the inner saboteur archetype and being out of integrity is a confidence killer 
• All of the small broken commitments compound to erode your trust in yourself
• I made goals in my human life this year to have more fun and learn to stop on ice skates, so I signed up for lessons to follow through on my word
• Spiritual growth and maturity will come from reflecting on the lessons of your experiences
• Honor the duality in the highs and lows of the month
• I feel it will be a powerful month for manifestation once you have completed a cycle
• New beginnings will follow the completed cycle through your awareness of the lesson
• With new opportunities come new challenges and lessons

The spiritual path can be lonely and I created the Spirit School Collective as a space where you can share your journey with one another. It is incredible to witness others and to be witnessed as you expand!

My Personal Development Journey

Happy New Year! This episode is my first recording of 2022, even though the Spirit Messages episode came out on January 2. After crossing the milestone of my second year of podcasting on December 22, I am excited to continue creating episodes when I am inspired!

I received the inspiration to share my personal development story in December, but it didn’t feel aligned to release it until now. In this episode, I am sharing my own personal development journey as well as some tips that you can use for your own.

Some highlights from the episode are:

• My official awakening was after the birth of my daughter in 2013
• I did not believe the many mediums who told me in readings that I could do this work
• The first reading I did scared me because it was my first experience with deep grief 
• I grew up watching John Edwards and reading Sylvia Browne
• My first 3 years of development was in circles with the same mentor, meeting only once per month, making it a slow and steady path
• My devotion outside of that was in meditation, sitting in the power and connecting with my guide Skylar for guidance
• When I released the pressure to work for the public and accepted that my soul would let me know when I was ready, I had opportunities come to me
• After the birth of my son, I went full-time and came out of the spiritual closet
• I continued to develop under mentors, take workshops and do practice readings
• My performance anxiety with paid readings
• Spirit ALWAYS shows up
• My next challenge was that all of my clients wanted psychic readings and my Spirit team gave me an evidential psychic reading bootcamp
• Returning to mediumship showed me that it still works after a break
• I realized that my most profound development was from Spirit in the actual sessions 
• Knowing your worth helps you achieve your mediumship goals, not the other way around
• So much of the development path is the inner healing work
• The experiences in our everyday life also help us in our development and mediumship references

I am so excited to share this episode of my interview with my mediumship mentor Dominic Boag! I have been working with him for the past year as my mediumship changed after losing my cat Bender and experiencing grief for the first time. I love to watch Dominic demonstrate and enjoy his cadence as I am sure you will as well.

Dominic first began developing his mediumship in the Spiritualist Church after the loss of his father when he was fourteen years old and was working as a medium at sixteen. He describes his journey as being fairly natural and has allowed it to unfold with the guidance of Spirit.
